On November 2, voters in Massachusetts will be asked to repeal the sales tax on alcohol, thanks to an ill-conceived effort to put the question on the ballot engineered by the liquor industry. Sound fiscal policy gives exemptions from the sales tax to basic necessities, such as food, clothing and prescription medicines. Alcohol does not deserve a special tax break.
At this time of unprecedented budget cuts, Massachusetts cannot afford to forgo revenues. Proceeds from the alcohol sales tax go directly to a Substance Abuse Treatment Fund, to support critical public health services for more than 100,000 residents.
